Faith
Celebrated - North (East) Mumbai
On August 22, 2010, 194 children of Std. V & VI, from the
Sunday schools of seven different parishes met together at Don Bosco School,
Matunga. They were accompanied by 18 teachers.
The theme of the programme was “God’s Wonderful Creation”.
The celebration began with a meaningful Eucharist celebrated by Fr Wilfred
D’Souza, sdb, who emphasised several points about God’s creation. The liturgy
was prepared by St Dominic Savio’s (Wadala East) and the choir by St Paul’s
(Dadar). The backdrop was designed by Our Lady of Dolours (Wadala West). A
lively ice-breaker session “Bombing the Seasons” was organised by Our Lady of
Fatima (Sewri). Christabelle Godinho of St Dominic Savio presented an
informative and interesting session on “Importance and Appreciation of God’s
Creation” Michelle D’Souza of Our Lady of Dolours presented “My Faith Response
to God’s Creation”. The children were very attentive and actively participated
in the whole programme.
Justice Sunday celebrations
The Church in India celebrated Justice Sunday on August
22, 2010. On the occasion, JPC Mumbai held a seminar at St Pius X College.
Representatives from various parishes in the archdiocese attended. Fr Allwyn
D’Silva, chairperson, JPC, welcomed the gathering and introduced the theme of
the programme, “Ecological Crisis: A Justice Issue”. Referring to the mandate
God gave to humankind (Gen. 2:15), he said that as stewards of creation we have
to use the earth’s resources judiciously. Fr Lancy Pinto then spoke at length on
the theme. He said that earlier concerns about the environment focused on
pollution and its effects on the natural world. It was the Dunkel Draft of 1992
that drew attention to the fact that economics and ecology were interlinked, and
that the balance between the two was, therefore, a justice issue.
Next, there was a talk show on the issues that affect
Mumbai city, moderated by Bro Joshua D’Souza. There were renowned speakers.
Gordon D’Souza, editor-Spotlight, talked about SEZ. Vera Alvares, social
activist, spoke about the ALM movement in Bandra. Kalpana Dabre of Pariyavaran
Suraksha Kendra related the efforts that have been made in Our Lady of Nazareth
Church and School to involve schoolchildren and the community in caring for the
environment. Pari Selvan, social activist, explained the dynamics of development
as experienced by the people of Dharavi. Fr Allwyn summed up the proceedings of
the evening and invited those present to participate in the efforts of JPC to
spread awareness on the ecological crisis.
YOUTHSAV 2010
250 youth participated in ‘Youthsav 2010’ organised by the
Legion of Mary, Mumbai Regia on August 29. The theme was ‘JESUS CONNECTING
PEOPLE’.
Fr Lincoln Rebello
enlightened the Youth on “Relationship with God and others“ and gave them Ten
Commandments for Friendship practical for today’s world. He explained the
autobiography of a coconut as a metaphor for the human mind with group
discussions.
Adele Pereira,
trained by the Archdiocesan Family Commission, spoke on ‘Secret to Happiness’
touching topics like accepting one’s sexuality, God in the midst of intimacy,
and the blunt difference between marriage and live-in relationships.
Two seminarians and five novices gave
heartwarming sharing of the Lord’s Call. The Youth enjoyed gospel music played
by the Gospel band G-SUS. His Lordship Bishop Bosco Penha celebrated the Holy
Eucharist. His love for the youth was very apparent. The Youth were left with
fond memories and newfound friends.
Catholic Bible Institute
Annual Course
A four
weeks’ Bible course was conducted at Vinayalaya Retreat House from Aug 2-28. A
total of 24 participants came from Mumbai, Delhi, Kerala, Vijayawada, Varanasi,
Ranchi, Goa and from Holland, Hungary, Cambodia, Myanmar and Dubai.
The first week was devoted to the Old Testament and the
next three weeks to the New Testament. Fr Fio Mascarenhas, Dr Renu Silvano and
their team did an excellent job of imparting in-depth knowledge of the
Scriptures, by a practical and pragmatic approach which offered clarity of
understanding. There was energy, excitement and enthusiasm in lapping up the
Word of God. The daily schedule was tight, with six hours of lectures daily,
along with the Eucharist, private study, biblical prayer of the Church, and
fellowship.
Bandra hosp gets city’s first hybrid cath lab
A cardiac patient now
has the option to immediately undergo a surgery if his angiograph shows that he
requires it. Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, on August 29, inaugurated the first
hybrid cath lab of the city at Holy Family Hospital in Bandra. Dr Brian Pinto,
head of cardiology at the hospital said, “The Cath Lab enables real-time
diagnosis, interventional procedures and open surgery. If an artery is suddenly
ruptured during a small procedure, a patient who would earlier be moved to an
operation theatre, can now undergo a corrective procedure in the same room.” The
lab can be used for planned surgeries too. Dr Pinto added there are many hybrid
combination procedures that can be performed in this cath lab.
